A string quartet plus a solo saxophone! Get ready for an amazing performance featuring this intriguing combination of instruments. The performers in this ensemble are from the Grand Rapids Symphony.
The concert opens with Phoenix Rising, composed in 2016. This one-movement work was composed for string quartet by Stacy Garrop. It is based on the text, “The phoenix HOPE can wing her way through the desert skies and, still defying fortune’s spite, revive from ashes and RISE” by author Miguel de Cervantes. The music is filled with fiery rhythms, sublime melodies, and sparkling harmonies, and it depicts the fiery flame of the phoenix. The concert then features two multi-movement works for string quartet and saxophone, composed by Ellen Taffe Zwilich and Adolf Busch.
